Four exciting work packages for various municipal entities in Region C this quarter guarantees food on the table for numerous local families.
Local entrepreneurs recently gathered at the Discovery Recreation Centre where Joshco, Pikitup and Group Corporate and Shared Services (GCSS) presented unique job packages to be executed over the next three months.
The packages were presented under the Jozi@Work umbrella, which is aimed at not only fighting poverty, unemployment and inequality but also harnessing a culture of entrepreneurship in communities. Similar debriefings were held at the Roodepoort Rugby Club and in Zandspruit earlier in April.
The biggest package was presented by Joshco, the city’s social housing entity, which will over the course of the next couple of weeks appoint four cooperatives to build a retaining wall at the Fleurhof housing development. The package is valued at R970 000 and is to be completed over the next three months. Calgro M3, the company responsible for the housing development, will act as a Capacity Support Agent (CSA) to the cooperatives over the next few months.
According to Joscho’s Nkululeko Magubane, the presenter, “The wall will be 2.4m high and 800m long”.
“Key additional works will include the excavation of earthworks, filling of foundation, insertion of termite poisoning and reinforcement of strip fittings,” he explained during the meeting.
Furthermore, waste collection entity Pikitup presented two work packages relating to the cleaning, sanitisation and lubrication of 35 of their waste collection trucks as well as repairs and daily inspection. Pikitup’s Nathan Esau said relevant work uniforms and safety equipment will be provided for the package and recouped from the cooperatives.
GCSS presented a fourth work package pertaining to the washing of 210 vehicles belonging to various municipal entities in Region C. The vehicles are to be washed twice a month at designated wash bays, meaning cooperatives involved would not need to own a car wash facility. Again, GCSS will provide supplies, consumables and raw materials to carry out the work, which will later be recouped from the cooperatives. The cooperatives will be paid R60 per bakkie or passenger car, R96 per minibus and R120 per truck.
The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) has budgeted a massive R3 billion for Jozi@Work packages this financial year, compared to last year’s R1.1 billion, which will mean many more exciting work opportunities will hit Roodepoort’s streets soon.
